Castles and Dragons!

I have a few classes where the kids just love to draw! Their enthusiasm is an art teacher's dream come true. I saw these cool pulled paint castles on Ms. Maynard's Art Room (Found on mrsmaynardsartroom.blogspot.com ). and I couldn't wait to try it! I liked how the technique used paint in an unusual way. It also reminded me of cool, old retro illustrations. The technique was a little trickier than I anticipated so I recommend practicing first, but everyone got the hang of it fast. We added dragons to our castles! Check them out!!

Watercolor Poppies!!

Watercolor Poppies!! Last week we made watercolor poppies. It's one of those lessons that turns out beautiful and unique for each student. Most of my lessons are drawing based so it's nice to do a painting based project. I had everyone draw simple poppy flowers then use a variety of watered down acrylics for the background and flowers. I love the accidental color blends and drips created when painting wet into wet. We finished off our poppies with oil and chalk pastel. Enjoy!!

Art Show At Foxy!!

Last Friday was our "Box Troll" Art Show at Foxy Loxy Print Gallery and Cafe! So much fun!! The kids were 100% dedicated to their box trolls and stayed engaged through out the 3-4 weeks it took to make them. Our box trolls were made out of Celluclay with beans and pasta added for character (we did have a few sewn box tolls in the mix). For the most part we only sculpted a head and torso since they wear boxes. I had a "junk box" that students could choose from when decorating. Check out our finished box trolls and shots from the show!!

Trick Your Pumpkin!

Last May Amanda Kingloff (http://amandakingloff.com/) visited the studio for a book signing. A few weeks back she posted an Instagram pic of her Michael's "Trick Your Pumpkin" submission (http://www.michaels.com/trick-your-pumpkin-sweepstakes/trick-your-pumpkin.html) so I decided Scribble should also submit (I love Amanda Kingloff and if she's doing something I want to too!). I went with a "Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater" theme. Take a look at the process and final product!!

The Art of Giving!

This past Sunday we participated in Next Generation's BBB on Isle of Hope. Scribble helped kids create artwork that would later be hung in the children's wing of the  hospital. I love when I get the chance to combine art with a great cause. I had to come up with something that would work for all age and experience levels, plus the event was outdoors so I had that to factor in as well. Here's what I came up with!

The background is made up of layered tissue paper!

The center of each flower is stamped, using sticker back foam mounted on cardboard!

I kept the petal palette limited to bright, happy colors. Scrap fabric leaves were added as a final touch!

A Little Color!

This week we did mixed media owls! I LOVED this project and thought each and every owl looked adorable. After drawing our owls we used oil pastels in the eyes, beak, and stomach. We used 2 to 3 paints for the body of the owl and background. Lastly we added torn paper wings. I really enjoyed the "action" quality mixing the paint on the paper added to the art work and plan to use this technique again!
